Refugia
Refugia’s are places that remain relatively safe and stable in the face of chaos.
In the face of climate collapse, destruction, change, a refugia is a safe haven in a sometimes unsafe and unpredictable world.
Beavers make refugia. They build and build and build, instinctively, creating space where water slows and where other species can survive. A whole ecosystem, held together by care.
It makes me wonder, what would it mean for us to do the same? To become refugia for one another. Not in some grand, heroic way (sure, maybe that too) - but in daily ways. A conversation where I truly listen to listen, not listen to speak. A body that feels safe to enter. A body that doesn’t judge another body. A presence that doesn’t rush, demand or take. And maybe refuge isn’t permanent. Maybe it’s momentary. A glance. A seat offered on a plane. A listening ear. A place where someone can land without shrinking.
Call me your refugia, call me your refuge.
Not because I have it all figured out, but because I am willing to hold a little steadiness in a world that is constantly shifting. A temporary shelter from the storm of being alive.
What if we all built like beavers, quietly, persistently, making small refugias for each other to rest, to breathe, to be?
Engaged Liberation is a labor of love. But it is labor. If you love it, support it for less than $5/mo. Thank you!
