It’s not survival of the fittest, it never was, it’s about adaption. Those who could adapt to change (the only constant) were those who could thrive.
There is no better way to adapt than to learn how to arrive, let go, stop controlling, stop resisting, and to be with an experience. That is what is at the heart of meditation. Meditation is a beautiful free tool for practicing how to adapt.
I believe the simple act of arriving in this moment is more beneficial to our adaptation and thriving than all the things we do to “fix,” “heal,” or “make ourselves better.”
Happiness and peace is not thing that occurs in the future, after 50 year of sitting cross-legged and saying "OM." It’s not gonna be spontaneous, you cross some sort of lines and the troubles cease. It’s here, in this instant.
The reason we’re not experiencing this state is because we’re resisting what is. All the time, so much resistance - to the temperature, to the weather, to the room, to the person, to ourselves, to the job… We resist because we want to control the moment - control every knob and switch (ref - mahamudra).
By softening our resistance, we let go of anticipating the next moment, trying to control it, or trying to hang on to this moment that has just passed.
If we let go of trying to control the experience of the moment, if we can practice letting go of clinging to what has just occurred and actually experience it, then experience arises like a note of music. The minute you hear a note, it's already passing away. The instant you've heard it, it's already dissolving. So every single moment is dissolving as it arises.
Aromatherapy, acupuncture, bio-feedback, chiropractic, homeopathy, tarot cards, astrology, autogenic training, flotation tanks (how handy is a flotation tank in the middle of a family argument?)… you can rarely stop in the middle of a speech to go into a hypnotic trance and stick ourselves with acupuncture needles.
To adapt to the moment, we must have the skill set to meet the moment.
I’m not saying don’t get chiropractic or acupuncture, I am making the invitation that those approaches are temporary. That if our basic perceptions of the world stay the same, and the same emotional pressures are there, and our same emotional responses are there, then all will remain the same.
The conscious use of the mechanism of surrender and arrival is wildly effective. Maybe that’s insight to why it’s so hard. It doesn’t cost anything. You just have to sit down and be with yourself in this moment. Someone can’t sell it to you and you can’t write it off in insurance. You just have to do it. Nike philosophy - just do it.
To be able to adapt is to thrive. One of the most beautiful and short fire ways to thrive is to stop resisting this moment and surrender to it. Always this moment. Always arriving in this moment.
